I've been a professional animator for over 35 years working for Disney, DreamWorks, and others. Hand drawn animation is my favorite technique so I post mostly hand drawn animation tests here, but professionally I also work in cg. If you want to know more you can find info at the wiki page linked below.
vivo test
Super quick test that I did in pre production for Vivo. I just wanted to see if I could approximate a chalk drawing feel for some of the dance sequences. His design changed as it went further into production but I think this little snippet turned out rather fun.

Centaurworld pre production test
Переглядів 79 тис.Місяць тому
This is a short test that I did a few years ago for Megan Dong's Centaurworld show. I was trying to get as close as I could to Megan's sketchbook style which I think is so fun. She uses marker pens and I was trying to get that feeling in TvPaint. The show itself turned out a bit more standard in its technique, but I was trying to give them a little push.

I had the pleasure of going to Italy a couple of weeks ago to do an animation workshop for Nemo Academy in Florence. It's a great school and they are such lovely and generous people. I roughed out the first version of this test during the workshop and then I tied it down later when I got home. The sound is Roberto Benigni from "Life is Beautiful" and he says, "Guardate che roba! Cartilagine mob...
Scar Tests

These are nearly all of the Scar shots that I animated for Lion King. Apologies for the low res. - it was 1992! You can see some of the early tests, reworked versions etc. This is all pre Hans Zimmer, so it's all scratch music from other movies. Enjoy.

Another doggy animation. I can't seem to stop animating dogs, they're the best! Anyway, this was started as a live demonstration at The Art Department event run by We Are Playgrounds in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Then I finished it off at home.

www.indiegogo.com/projects/syrenka-legend-of-the-warsaw-mermaid This is a beautiful pencil test by my friend Tina Nawrocki, you might know her work on the "Cuphead" game. She is making a hand drawn animated short about a Polish mermaid called "Syrenka: Legend of the Warsaw Mermaid". Hand drawn animation is very important to me - nothing else seems as magical as drawings that come to life! If yo...

This is another one of my animation demonstration lecture pieces. I think this one was for USC. The students gave me the sound file and this is what I animated for them live in the lecture.
Wolfwalkers pencil test

Pencil test for two shots (the only 2) that I animated for Wolfwalkers. I absolutely loved working with Tomm and everyone at Cartoon Saloon.
Fullerton the Squirrel

This five second test took about three hours to animate. I did it for a demonstration lecture for the students at Cal State Fullerton. If you want to see the full three hour demonstration, it's here: ua-cam.com/video/rG2UJ2kcdlE/v-deo.html

Here's some more Quasimodo that I animated. The cut is slightly different from what ended up in the final film, with less time spent on the cut-away to the gargoyles. Plus the original intent was to just have them look sad, and not goof around.

Here's a short bit that I animated towards the end of "Hunchback"
Lion King first roughs vs tie downs

Here's three shots from The Lion King showing my first rough pass compared to my tie down pass. In the first two shots Simba is animated by the brilliant Ruben Aquino. You can see that my first sketches are really scribbly.
Spirit and Rain

This is a pencil test that has been elsewhere on the internet. I thought I would put it here too. I animated this little section after Spirit sees Rain on the river bank to where the shot dissolves and Matt Damon's voice over starts.
Happy Anniversary!

Here's a little animation that I did for Kendra as an anniversary gift. She then very kindly did the ink and paint on it. It's what we wish we could do in Animal Crossing New Horizon when we play together.
Hi, this is Diego. I'm gonna assume this won't be answered but are you available for commission work? I can't find another place to contact you
Trying to figure out if this is a CGI background or the best use of paralax animation I've ever seen in my life.
It's parallax. It's composited in After Effects and many of the background layers are either warped or set at an angle which gives it a kind of 2.5D look. There's no actual cg elements in any of the hand-drawn sequences in Enchanted.
@@jamesbaxter1236 That is awesome. I mean Disney was always great at parallax, but this is on another level.
wow! I knew you did Rafiki. Didnt know you worked on scar too!
the 3d scenes are cool and all, but I love how he pulls his cheek around his face, it's so nicely done!
Wow! Fantastic job!
live action aint got shit on this
I love how he steps towards the camera before the line starts, it's like he's a real actor actually doing a real take
I wanted to be that chair.
perfect
Amazing!

The movie that got canceled
That must be some good dog food
I had no idea so many of the beautiful and captivating scenes from films I love were Baxter's work. When I saw the Adventure Time episode, I didn't know anything about the guest animators and just knew I loved how fluid and charismatic James Baxter was. You have such talent and I'm grateful for all of your work!
This is incredible! 🎉 james, were you the person who animated the iconic simba lift in the circle of life sequence and the rotation shot of baby simba?
If a movie or show has James Baxter you know it’ll have godlike animation
JAMES BAXTER 🐴
thank you James Baxter for creating this masterpiece
:D 🎺
0:19 This must have been a really intimidating character acting shot to get right. Because Scar himself is acting, trying not to let the thrill of his victory betray his facade, but also you can’t have him seem too remorseful, because he definitely isn’t. He has to come across in a very controlled way.
This guy is like an animation God wtf. Unreal.
I love this animation SO GOSH DARNED MUCH AAAAAAAA
Came to see if you had a youtube channel! And you do! Oooohh this looks gorgeous, though!
I wanna try dubbing this for practice. Hope that's okay.
Old Disney 😢
A horse animated this?
I like to imagine this one is the original Medusa, the one who wasn’t cursed, but was in fact, born like this
EPIC
The moment this scene started I tought "What the heck, the animation suddenly became God-like". Turns out it was made by a godly animator.
My brain can't pricess that this is hand drawn 2D and not very well stylized 3D
THIS IS SO GOOD
I LOVE CENTAURWORLD SO MUCH!!!!
Did you end up animating anything that made it into the final show?
That perspective shot at the start was really exquisite 🍷
I fell in love with her as a child and even went to libraries to find out where Eldorado was (it was useless, that’s why I don’t like libraries now). I even asked my least favorite geography teacher
Astonishing
I feel like Quasimoto as a design wouldnt be possible to bring to screen UNLESS you were animating him. Which you so clearly did, and aced. Insane.
I always wondered who made this incredibly dimensional mind boggling sequence. Of COURSE it was you, James
Come to think of it "Wish" having these 7 characters be a reference of the 7 dwarves would've worked much better with this concept
I feel like one of three people in the world who genuinely loves Heaven's Light more than Hellfire, and this particularly sequence *always* made me cry, *always* gave me chills, and inspires me deeply. <3
Tremendo
HELP... i love wammawink
I'd love to see that as an actual movie.
That's a 3 dimensional camera movement in 2D space. How on model do you have to be to make that work!? You are a god, sir.
He’s an absolute animation powerhouse like oh my goodness
Honest to god this might be one of my least favourite shows
God, you make me wanna go back to art school and realize my childhood dreams 😭
2:19 does this Who Framed Roger Rabbit scene appear in the movie?
It's from "Tummy Trouble", the first of several Roger Rabbit shorts that Disney made after the movie came out.
Ottima animazione davvero carina
I can't believe they got James Baxter for the show about horses and centaurs.
